Every year I do the exact same thing. I panic about three weeks out, I open six tabs, and I buy something that is objectively fine. A candle. A nice bag. Something that earns a real thank you and then goes and sits somewhere.
The problem was never the presents. The problem was that I kept buying objects when what I actually wanted to give her was an evening. You cannot wrap an evening. Or so I thought.
Last winter I bought her something blank.
It showed up vacuum packed and flat, so small I genuinely thought they had shipped the wrong thing. When I opened it out it was a blanket, black, printed edge to edge in white line art. Roses, daisies, butterflies, a lot of tiny leaves. No color anywhere. Just the drawing, waiting.
There was a box of 24 markers in with it.
The ten seconds where I thought I had made a mistake
I handed it to her and watched her try to work out what she was holding. She said, and I am quoting, “wait, it’s blank.” There was a pause where I fully believed I had bought my girlfriend a coloring book the size of a bed and would be hearing about it for a decade.
Then she picked up a marker.
Half past one in the morning
Here is the part I did not plan for. We ended up on the living room floor. Both of us. She took the roses on the left, I took a corner of daisies, and neither of us said very much for about two hours. At some point I looked up and it was one thirty in the morning and we had not finished a single quarter of it.
The next night we did it again. And then it just became a thing we did. It lived over the arm of the sofa and got picked up whenever something was on TV. I started being able to tell which flowers were hers.
I have bought her genuinely expensive presents. None of them bought me forty hours of sitting on the floor next to her with my phone face down in another room.
What it actually is, honestly
I want to be straight about this because the internet is not. It is a throw, not a thick winter blanket. The printed side has to be smooth so the ink sits on it cleanly, which means it is not the fluffy thing you see in the ads for other products. The back is plain black plush and it is soft. It is the right weight for a lap or a couch or over the top of a duvet, and it is not the thing keeping you warm in January.
The markers are acrylic paint pens. That matters for two reasons. One, the color is permanent, so what you put down stays down and you can wash the blanket without your work disappearing. Two, they bleed through if you color heavily, so put a flattened box or some newspaper underneath before you start. We learned that on a rug.
And you will use the markers up if you are a completist. We got the larger size and went through the greens before we hit the far corner. A second set from a craft store fixed it in a day. If I bought it again I would order the spare at the same time and not think about it.
The part I did not expect
We finished it in early spring. I let it dry a full day, washed it inside out on cold, air dried it, and it went straight back on the couch.
That is the bit nobody tells you about. Every other craft thing we have ever done got finished and then got put in a drawer. This one got finished and then just carried on being furniture. It is on the sofa right now. There is a rose on it that I colored badly and she will not let me fix.
I have since bought two more, one for my sister and one for my mother, who does hers in front of the TV and reports her progress to me weekly like a project manager.
Would I do it again
I gave her hours instead of an object, and then the hours turned into an object anyway. That is a better deal than anything I have found in six tabs at midnight.
If you are stuck on what to buy someone, buy them something unfinished, and then be the person who sits down and finishes it with them.
